Description

The Elephant Trunk nebula, IC 1396A or VDB 142, is a mass of interstellar dust and gas within the larger IC 1396 nebula. The bright rim of the dark cloud is illuminated by a massive, luminous blue star HD 206267. It lies about 3000 light years from our Solar System. The Trunk nebula contains some very young stars, as well, less than 100,000 years old.

The way this is displayed here is less than ideal, but I did not want to crop away all of the dark globules in the frame.
